greece, clear blue skies, salt water and blossoming flowers

Have I gone Marant for spring? Technically, no. Visually, yes. I found this gem at Lindex, for a fraction of the price of the Marant original and immediately jumped on the opportunity. Now I'll have a "fun" top as well as I'll be able to invest in a really nice sweater from APC. It's a win-win situation really. (Well, except for Isabel Marant whose design was ripped off).

spring essentials

Spring is finally here (more like summer really), so I thought I'd welcome it with a little beauty update!

01. CLEANSE.
I am an avid advocate for anything gentle when it comes to cleansing - think milky, non-foaming or creamy (or anything that claims to be for sensitive skin). My most recent discovery is the Mario Badescu Enzyme Cleansing Gel, which is a non-foaming, summer smelling treat. Another great discovery is the Clarisonic paired with the deep pore cleansing brush head (used about 2-3 times per week) which really, really makes my skin baby smooth and clears away blackheads. A final splash of toner (a blue bottled glycolic acid one from Mario Badescu) and I'm all ready for the next step.

02. TREAT YO' SELF.
I'm currently trying to use up every single drop of oil in my bathroom cabinet before splurging on the big time contender - the Rodin Olio Lusso (made out of heaven and meadows and double rainbows and unicorns and all that). So far, my rosehip oil has come to a finish (not a re-purchase kind of product) and I'm halfway through my Kiehl's Midnight Recovery Concentrate (I swear this one works like sourdough starter, it never gets empty). First, a spritz of the Caudalie Eau de Raisin and then a couple of drops of the Kiehl's oil smeared all over the face. I feel like it's easier to put on if the face is moist. On those dry skin days, I'll put some Kiehl's moisturizer on too.

03. NO ACTION WITHOUT PROTECTION.
I cleanse my face and do all that at night, because I feel like my face needs a couple of hours worth of rest before going out into the real world. Especially after having used the Clarisonic! In the mornings, the only prepping step I do is therefore to put on sunscreen (after a splash of cold water). Mine is from Kiehl's (damn, I should be some kind of representative for the brand - I'm dropping their name like crazy in this post) and has an SPF of 50. Better to be safe than sorry! Right? It sinks in so fast and doesn't leave any kind of oily residue whatsoever.

04. TIME TO GET DIRTY.
I've got myself a clean, happy face. Now it's time to get dirty! For my base I use the RMS concealer and.... that's about it. I've never been a fan of foundations (probably because I can't really figure out how to put one on without it looking like a layer of actual dirt on my face) and find natural skin much more appealing. If I feel like looking alive I might put on some (emphasis on some) blush. I am currently using either a cream blush from Topshop or a Dior lipstick in the colour Bobo. For the lips, I use a q-tip with some Nuxe Rêve de Miel lip balm on it and kind of scrub on my lips. I feel like this way the moisture sinks in a lot quicker. Plus, it kind of adds a natural flush to the lips. Oh, and the RMS living luminizer, which will seriously last you years. I've had mine for more than a year and I have yet to see the bottom of the pot yet - with practically daily usage too.

At night, I like to go red. As a thumb rule, I make sure I leave the rest of my face bare. I have two beloved products: Beauty Is Life lipstick (stays on forever, no matter how many you make out with) and my new love, the fabulously creamy Satin Lip Pencil from Nars in Majella. I think the reason why I love a red lip so much is because I'm lazy. Doing a cat eye, a smoky eye - basically any kind of eye, takes time and patience and a lot of touching up and frankly.. ain't nobody got time for that. A lip is so easy! You just put it on and that's that. End of story.

05. EXTRAS.
  • Exercise helps, or at least sweating does. I jog (slowly and loudly) and do hot yoga. If you're not the exercise kind of person, maybe you could try going to a sauna?
  • Greens also help. If you have trouble eating salad, you could try making a smoothie with spinach. My favourite mix goes like this: 2 handfuls of spinach, 1-2 handfuls of frozen mango, some orange juice and a touch of ginger. Supa' fresh and doesn't taste at all of spinach.
  • Nails. I'm really loving my Chanel polish (double layers make for the perfect colour).
  • Body. Exfoliation gloves, shower oil and an epilator (again, I'm lazy) are everyhing I need.
  • Hair. I got the tip from a hair dresser to wash my hair twice with shampoo. The first wash gets the dirt out and the second wash adds all the fabulous advantages the bottle promises. So I wash my hair twice with shampoo and that's it. No conditioner, no masks. I want to try something that adds volume to the roots, but I feel like any product that I've tried has made my hair either greasy or sticky.
  • Perfume. I have none. I have lots of testers though. (Walk into any Sephora and chances are they'll hand you a tiny bottle of some new perfume). Two scents I really like, however, are the Do Son by Diptyque and Byredo's Rose Noir. Both which cost a small fortune, which is why I am currently scentless.
  • Zinc! What an amazing little supplement. I've had trouble with dandruff and acne, both of which have improved tremendously since I started taking effizinc.
  • And then the best and most important beauty tip of them all: "If you have good thoughts they will shine out of your face like sunbeams and you will always look lovely.” - Roald Dahl.

the gluten update

Here goes the update. It's been two weeks. Two weeks without anything delicious. OK, I'm not going to exaggerate. Living without gluten isn't that difficult. I reckon two weeks might not be enough to see a change, but I've decided to quit. Quit on quitting gluten (hah!). Just for the simple reason that I haven't noticed a difference (and for the fact that I really, really (really) miss baguettes and cookies and pasta and pizza). I thought I'd share what I had for food if anyone ever wants to try going gluten free and is a lazy cook like I am.

For breakfast I basically had this every morning. I still have it, even if I am now 'allowed' to have bread or cereal. It's just that good. What you do is you boil quinoa with almond milk (any milk is fine, I just prefer almond) and frozen raspberries until the quinoa is done. Then you stir in some maple syrup (like a tablespoon) and cinnamon. Top with almonds if you like a little crunch in the mornings.

For proper food I've had basically any kind of protein paired with quinoa or potatoes or vegetables (or all of them!). You could also make loads of soups (carrot and coconut milk = a hit). And one thing I really like is chicken tacos with mango and avocado salsa. Basically just avoid pasta and you're good to go with lunch and dinner. What to have with coffee? Macarons were my first obvious choice. There's always chocolate. And if you're out, you could always try to look up what gluten free places there are in your town. If there are none, just bring your own set of cookies along with you!

So that's that. My very short two weeks of gluten free eating and its own matching short update. I am now more than excited to stuff my face with traditions, drink beer and not think twice about what I put in my mouth.

i've got summer on my mind, nowhere else though

black for spring

summer summer summer

print on print.

Maybe instead of going all out and Marant for spring (and summer), I should invest in a nice, black (or navy) sweater? It's versatile. And useable every season! Above are three looks showing how I'd wear one (well, they're two different ones, but the conept stays the same).

PS. Anyone out there with tips on what to do in Amsterdam? I'm thinking of going there for a day trip, so what are the must do's, see's and eat's in the city of bike garages?
PS2. Why do I all of a sudden like the LV monogram print?
PS3. Would you be interested in some lifestyle pictures? I.e. pictures of what I'm actually doing in Paris?

considering going marant for spring

I enjoyed Isabel Marants spring/summer 2013 collection. I really did. All those wacky tropical and paisley prints, knot-tied dresses, skimpy shorts and studded gladiator sandals would be a nice break from my black and white non-printed wardrobe. My bank account being more on the skinny side of the scale (that's what paying rent and food will do to you), I'm not going to be able to really splurge on something a bit more extravagant or something that I wouldn't be able to get daily usage from. My idea is to get some kind of top. As much as I think these are the coolest pants ever, I'd have to be realistic and say that I wouldn't a) be able to pull them off as well as that la garconne model, and b) find enough occasion to wear them. Tops are easy, tops are wearable.

Right now I'm quite liking these three options (the one to the far left being my top choice - just imagine it with a red lip and sunkissed skin, ahhh). I might need to have a look at the Isabel Marant store on Tuesday and see what I can find - maybe there's a hidden treasure somewhere in there! You never know...

setting up a savings account

Because I want to start studying? Because I'm buying an apartment? Because I know I am one day going to retire? Ha! No. Don't think I have actual common sense. (Never going to happen. Forever young and stupid). It's because of Dries van Noten's magical shoes from next season. And yes, they do deserve their own savings account.

saying au revoir to baguettes

I've had enough. Not enough of baguettes, no I could eat those all day every day. What I'm sick of is my skin not co-operating with me in the slightest. It seems we are not really on speaking terms lately. So what I want to do is get to the root of the problem. I know my baguette and pasta intake has taken a heavy incline since my arrival in Paris, and that gluten has an effect on the stomach which, if troubled, is known to effect your face. It was when I was getting one of the juices at Bob's Cold Press here in Paris (I had a fantastic flavourful one with spinach, celery, ginger, apples and lemon) and asked about the 3-day juice cleanse that I first got the idea to cut gluten out. They told me that the 2 days before the cleanse they ask the customer to basically cut out everything delicious (gluten, dairy, alcohol, caffeine and meat). While I was tempted to buy the 3-day programme (the pricetag is at €195 and they supply you with juices and nut milks to savour), I decided against it. Not because the juice I tried wasn't delicious (because boy it was), but because I know myself and that I would probably kill both of my roommates if I were to live solely on liquids.

I then decided to maybe try cutting something out, and dairy was my immediate thought (after all, breaking out and dairy has had multiple reports of co-excisting). After some thinking, I realised that I'm already mostly dairy free - I solely use almond milk for my hot chocolate dose or to put in smoothies, I might put cream in a soup or in a pasta dish but lately I've been using coconut milk instead and my consumption of cheese could be summed up with the word 'sparingly'. So I got to the conclusion that my gluten intake is probably the highest of them all. What with living in the city of baguettes and having to walk past endless boulangeries with the smell of fresh-out-of-the-oven-baguettes blowing at your face, cutting gluten out is going to be a real challenge.

However, after having googled about how to go gluten free I found there to be a good amount of meal options besides eating pasta for breakfast, lunch and dinner. What I'm going to replace it with? I found this post (first result on my google search, I'm not much of an investigator am I?) to be very helpful in terms of figuring out what I could cook up. Also, it feels better looking at a list of what you actually can eat (potatoes! a big ol' steak! quinoa! veggies! corn tortillas!) instead of one with forbidden ones.

Sunday will be day 1 and I'm going to make sure to keep a journal going, and then I'll give you guys an update on my skin's condition as the weeks pass. Wish me luck! (Merde!).
